Since 1933, over thirty tsunamis have hit the coastlines in Del Norte County. Some passed with very little fanfare, others left behind death and destruction in their wake. The two most prominent tsunamis crashed upon our shores in 1964 & 2011.

Every design we create at Fog Bank Clothing Company tells a story. Our “Tsunami Sucks 64/11” design is no different. A few months after the 2011 Tsunami took out the Crescent City harbor and fours years before Fog Bank Clothing Company was a twinkle in our eyes, the idea for the OG “Tsunami Sucks” design was born.

This shirt is not making a derogatory statement about tsunamis; it’s making an observational statement about how some tsunamis work. Just before a tsunami makes landfall the water can appear to be “sucked out” This phenomenon has lured people to their deaths as they curiously explore the suddenly exposed seafloor and are unable to get out of the way of the fast moving wave. Furthermore, most of the major damage done by tsunamis is not caused when the first wave hits, but when that water is sucked back out to sea, dragging all the debris with it. This is also referred to as the "drawback"

This shirt allows its wearer the opportunity to talk about the unique history of Del Norte County and explain the unfortunate natural disasters we call Tsunamis.
